France's Richard Virenque, my favorite rider for quite some time, takes the victory some 6 minutes ahead of the peloton. He led today's race - some of it with Axel Merckx, some of it solo - for somewhere around 200 KM. Pretty impressive stuff.
Virenque takes a commanding lead in the King of the Mountain (polka dot jersey, see icon) competition, as he won all nine of the day's climbs. People are talking about Lance's chance to break a record, but no one has ever won 7 KOMs and this would be 7 for Virenque, who will jump up several slots in the overall classification but remain a few minutes behind the yellow jersey of fellow frenchman Thomas Voeckler.
Nice Bastille Day for the French riders - huge stage win and they still hold the yellow. Posties will have to turn it on soon, though, I would expect.
